London/Normandy 2016: Day 2

At the Heathrow Airport Train Station
After spending many sleepless hours on the plane, we finally landed and began our exciting journey in the United Kingdom. After landing, we had a 15 to 20 minute train ride to our hostel. When we arrived to the hostel, we were welcomed to cozy rooms with the  privilege of having no shower curtains in our bathroom; despite this, our rooms are pretty nice. After freshening up in our hostels, we began to explore the city of London and we ended up at the British Museum.

The British Museum was large and, at times, overwhelming because there was so much to look at, while
Cleopatra's Mummy
having a time limit due to it closing. The museum was broken up into many sections based on countries and time periods, ranging from ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia to modern day history, while the countries ranged from Japan to the Americas.

Hamada Chimei's Work

One thing that stuck out in the museum was a drawing by a Japanese artist, Hamada Chimei. The drawing was from a series that depicted the trauma of the artist's wartime experience, along with the guilt and shock that many of the Japanese people felt following their defeat in the Second World War.

The Rosetta Stone
Another major experience that came from the museum was coming into contact with the Rosetta Stone. The Rosetta Stone is a rock slate that was discovered in 1799, and helped modern historians learn how to decipher ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics. Such a large artifact is key to the study of history and a true sight to see in person.

After the British Museum, we went all went our separate ways to find dinner. Many of us came across a restaurant and pub that had every type of food that you can think. We got things such as Shepard pie, fish and chips, and chicken. We all enjoyed our food and headed back to the hostel to get a good night sleep.
