Wheeling Jesuit University & Classrooms Without Borders

At 7pm on November 10, Wheeling Jesuit University will host an event in Troy Theater publicizing its partnership with Classrooms Without Borders (CWB). CWB is a Pittsburgh-based organization dedicated to improving Holocaust education in the greater Ohio Valley. Led by Dr. Zipora Gur, CWB provides educators and students the opportunity to increase their general knowledge of the Holocaust as well as give teachers the necessary tools to transmit this knowledge to their students in the classroom.

Dr. Gur's program takes groups to Berlin-Prague, Israel, and -- the topic of the November 10th meeting -- Poland. In June 2014, educators and students from various Ohio County institutions, including Wheeling Park High School, Central Catholic High School, The Linsly School and Wheeling Jesuit University will be participating in the program which consists of a rigorous academic seminar during spring 2014 in preparation for a trip to Poland, including Cracow and Auschwitz. For a brief overview of the program, see the October interview Dr. Gur gave to West Liberty University for its program Your Town.

At the Troy Theater event, noted Holocaust educator Rachel Korazim will give a talk entitled "Numbers, Pictures and Words." She will examine how statistics and what have become the iconic photographs of the Holocaust have helped to determine the way that it has been understood in collective memory. She will also provide alternative ways in which the Holocaust can be remembered and how to commemorate those who died. In addition, two local teachers who have participated in the 2012 Poland program and 2013 Berlin-Prague program, respectively, will discuss how their trips affected both their teaching and, more importantly, their general outlook on the human condition.

We encourage you to come and support this extraordinary organization and its mission. Hope to see you there.
