Vienna Day One: The Hofburg

After a crazy journey to Vienna, we started our day off with a trip to the imperial apartments. 



Here we learned about the royal family of Vienna. First, we saw the collection of porcelain and silver used by the ruling Habsburg family throughout the centuries. There were thousands of beautifully decorated plates, center pieces, candelabras, vases, and glassware.


Following this, we explored the lives of the Hapsburgs and learned about Empress Elisabeth, lovingly known as Sisi. Some fun facts about this heroine of Austria: She had ankle length hair, she stood five feet eight inches and weighed 100 pounds; she also had a 20 inch waist. Throughout this presentation of her life, we discovered the hidden realities and struggles of royalty -- including the hassle of hosting extravagant 9-13 course meals with table settings similar to the one pictured below.
